It’s pretty much accepted that in order to advance in these tough economic times, one has to advance one’s education. Another thing that’s growing in leaps and bounds is a way to hold down a job, continue one’s education and still have some kind of life – enrolling at an online college. Still, there are those who balk at the idea of taking virtual classes. They remember the days of chalkboards and notebooks, sitting with several hundred fellow students at a brick-and-mortar campus. The idea of learning online scares them.

A lot of this is they don’t know if they have the right kind of computer, much less how to effectively navigate the web or understand the software they have to use. The end result is they don’t have the confidence for distance learning. There is an abundance of information about online college degree programs on the web.

For starters, online colleges have now been at it for several decades. Over this time they’ve learned how to make accessing their resources as easy as possible for their students, and are more than willing to help. One of the ways they do this is by simplifying their procedures and how class work is done. This includes one’s hardware and software.

For starters, whether you use a desktop, laptop or iPad, your modem should have DSL or Wi-Fi. Any computer, even a refurbished one, has Internet access. Online colleges also design their websites to be as easily accessible as possible. So you can access it through Explorer, Firefox or whatever you use for your browser. It also doesn’t matter if you use PC or Mac.

What will probably give the online freshmen the most difficulty is what they do when they do get to their school’s web site. Both of these software’s are also easy to learn, as both have also been around for decades. Although, believe it or not, there will be times when you do have to crack open a real book. Even the founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, admits he still reads them! There is an abundance of information about distance learning education on the web.

Where e-learning has it all over on campus schools is its utilization of video and audio streaming. This is where DSL or Wi-Fi is critical. They can handle the data load with a speed that allows you to watch the videos as often as you like, without them constantly pausing to reload. Once you get the hang of this though, you’ll wonder why you didn’t go online sooner.

Maybe online schools seems something completely alien to a person who never studied at home. At the same time, these institutions have made the software and hardware of distance learning degree programs so easy anyone who now goes on Facebook should have no problem picking it all up.

Medical Assistants Can Advance Their Careers With Online College

Many people would be amazed to hear what one of most in-demand professions is these days. It’s the medical assistant. That’s right. The sweet young woman who greets you in some capacity from behind the partitioning glass panes at your doctor’s office is part of the fastest growing professions in the country. A degree from traditional or distance learning college might not be needed for the receptionist, but those skilled assistants in the back room usually have one.

According to the Bureau, there are currently slightly over 480,000 medical assistants in the U.S. as of 2008. They predict there will be a need for an additional 160,000-plus by 2018. That’s a whopping 34% increase. The average growth rate for most professions over that same period of time is a much more modest 11-12% per profession.

One important thing though, a medical assistant can’t get by with just a sweet smile and smooth demeanor. This still predominantly female occupation does require strong organizational, communications and management skills. While a heavy knowledge of medical procedure isn’t a requirement, a fundamental comprehension will work wonders. The occupation actually breaks down into three distinct categories, each one more advanced-and thus better paying than the latter. They are:

(1) Administrative Medical Assistants – These are the young ladies who greet you at the doctor’s office. Besides that, the job specs expect them to maintain medical records, help in billing and handle answering telephones, scheduling appointments, and basic bookkeeping and correspondence. The smaller the office, the more tasks an administrative assistant usually handles.

(2) Clinical Medical Assistants – They have more duties, depending on state law. Common tasks include taking medical histories and recording vital signs, explaining treatment procedures, preparing and assisting during exams. They also collect and prepare specimens and perform basic tests, and dispose of and/or sterilize medical instruments. It’s also not uncommon for them to instruct patients, administer medications, telephone prescriptions, draw blood, and much, much more – all the while keeping the examination rooms neat and clean.

(3) Specialized Medical Assistants – These assistants’ responsibilities depend on their doctor’s specialty. For instance, some of them include ophthalmic/optometric (eye) or podiatric (feet). For instance, ophthalmic medical assistants help ophthalmologists provide eye care. They conduct diagnostic tests, measure and record vision, and test eye muscle function. They apply eye dressings and also show patients how to insert, remove, and care for contact lenses.

Entry into the profession is pretty straightforward. A kid out of high school could land an administrative position, but going to a secretarial school the year certainly helps. She can advance herself by enrolling in an online college, taking courses during off hours, and thus advancing up the ladder. A two year degree should lead into the specialty arena. If one wants to grow into nursing, this is also an excellent way to start.

Salary-wise, someone fresh out of high school should expect somewhere in the high teens to the low 20’s. The median range is about $25,000 and goes up to $29,000. Health benefits also are fairly standard. No matter how you look at it, it’s a great occupation for those looking to enter the professional world and can lead to a number of other opportunities through distance learning degree program.

Online programs allow you to continue working as you advance your career. Perhaps the highest assistant on the tier will be your ideal niche, however, you may find yourself encouraged to go for a medical college degree and really get into the health care field.

GI’s Attend College Long Distance And Get Financial Aid!

There is no question that the security and freedom of our nation depends on those men and women who choose to serve in the military. In World War II, soldiers returning home from years of service were rewarded with the first GI Bill. In 1944, Congress approved the bill, which provided financial aid in the form of economic grants so that returning vets could go to school after their years of service. Millions of military members used the GI Bill to improve life for them and their families, and in so doing, also improved the economic health of the nation. Ever since September 11, 2001, the men and women in the armed forces have trained and worked harder than ever. The Post-9/11 GI Bill was enacted specifically to reward service members who have served more than 90 days since 9/11 with financial aid for education. The Department of Veterans Affairs administers the program, and there are many grants and scholarships available to veterans and their families.

One of the best things about the New GI Bill is that it covers tuition and fees for online education. Not every service member wants to attain a traditional degree. They may want to use their financial aid to complete an independent study program or to complete their Continuing Education credits for a job they already have. All of these types of online education are covered in the New GI Bill under a program called the Montgomery Bill.

While online classes are covered by the New GI Bill, the Department of Veterans Affairs only recognizes accredited online universities or colleges. The VA recognizes that programs that soldiers can complete while they are overseas on a deployment are an important part of the GI Bill package. However, if a military member enrolls in a college or university that is not accredited, financial aid will not cover the cost of those classes. Grants and scholarships for family members of the military are also available through the New GI Bill. There are many other grants and scholarships available for spouses and children of military members. The New GI Bill does more to help military members and vets go to school than it ever has. Tuition may be covered up to 100% in many cases, and financial aid benefits up to $49,000 may be awarded. The money can be used for a wide variety of expenses, including books, fees, or other expenses. Once a veteran or military member decides to use his or her beneGfits, they need merely to apply online or at their local Veterans Affairs office.

Since the GI Bill pays for online courses at accredited universities, members do not have to wait to get back to the U.S. to start school. Even if they use the entire amount of scholarships and grants that is available to them, the benefits of the GI Bill are completely tax free.
